An explosive-laden drone targeted the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Baghdad on Sunday morning.
The incident dramatically raises tensions in the country after protests in the Iraqi capital over the outcome of last month's general elections.
Seven of Kadhimi's guards sustained more significant injuries.
”We assess that this would not have happened if Qassem Suleimani was still alive”, said one Iraqi official. ”There is no longer the same hold over the militia groups as there was under him. This means the link to seat of power in Tehran is not as strong as it was.”
The security situation is now stable inside the Baghdad Green Zone, where government buildings and foreign embassies are located, including the U.S. Embassy.
