Since October 7, 2023, Hamas in Gaza has waged a war that continues to this day. A war which claimed the lives of prominent figures, from Lebanon to Iran: Ismail Haniyeh and some 60 members of his family, Yahya Sinwar, Hassan Nasrallah, Ali Khamenei, the Iranian Supreme Leader, and his numerous senior aides.
Despite this horrific toll of names, losses, and thousands of victims, none of the war's objectives have been fulfilled: Gaza remains in ruins, alike southern Lebanon which became a wreck, and even Donald Trump and his welfare program hasn't yet resolved anything.
None of the parties involved in this war took realistically their rivals and enemies into account. When Hamas launched the October 7th war, it didn't consider that it was giving Netanyahu, and by extension America, a license to an endless war. Israeli Prime Minister even went so far as to say, repeatedly, that he was redrawing the map of the Middle East. But Trump didn't hesitate to remind to his closest ally: "Without me, you wouldn't exist. Neither you nor Israel."
Of course, this is a metaphor, like trying to wipe Iran off the face of the earth. Instead, a hundred Lebanese towns and at least 10% of Gaza's population were wiped out, and Lebanon's economy was destroyed.
The entire region erupted. It was said that the Iranian nuclear facilities were struck and they were completely destroyed, but Iran continues to strike, and the conflict continues without signs of any solution. Iran expands the map of its enemies whenever the world thinks it is being rational. The war has obliterated all familiar norms, especially those governing transportation, energy, and diplomatic protection.
What began as an attack in Gaza on October 7th has changed into a global conflict that has — so far — brought down the British government and may alter the elections in America and Israel, not just the Middle East.
